I hate CHEMO but my hair is growing-Help

So as you can see my hair was super long. I have always wore it long a few times shoulder length So when I was diagnosed with cancer the first thing I thought of was Oh my goodness am I going to die and not be able to raise my girls? It was so scary.(still is) The second thing I thought of was my hair. What was going to happen? Sure enough the drs told me that I would lose my hair after about 2 weeks of chemo. So I started letting my girls cut my hair before I just let my husband (strong army soldier) shave my head. Lots of tears. The girls handled pretty good. They kept telling me how beautiful I was as for the soldier...he was strong for me but shortly after shaving my head he took a little drive as for me cried like a baby. Anyway this is bringing back some very painful memories. So here I am my last chemo treatment was Dec 31! My hair is growing and it is not the same. The color is different shades of gray and it is curly and super thick. I have no idea what to do with it. So it gets a hat most of the time. I use to wear my wigs but no so much anymore. So my question is what color? How do I style it? If you have any suggestions I need some help:)

As far as I've heard it isn't uncommon for your hair to regrow completely different. I know my mom's did. It used to be chesnut brown and it came back much darker, and with more gray than there had been before.

My advice: Be bold! Try anything! Experiment with things you'd liked before but thought you'd never have the guts to do. :)

Cindy, first I just wanted to tell you what beautiful, brave daughters that you have! I enjoyed reading your posts about each of them. Second, I have heard the same about hair that comes back after chemo, but I would color it whatever shade you like, try some blonde highlights, or go with some red shades. If you don't like it you can always change it again.

I have curly hair but I fight with it daily to make it straight (only works because it's so dry in WA). I say try a color you've never tried. Get yourself a good curl cream to tame it a bit, a spaceship looking defuser for your hairdryer to help define the curls and go from there.

Once you get your curls under control you can style it however you want (I am a fan of the sloppy but sexy looking pony tail).

My SIL's hair came back curly after her first round of chemo too, she chose to have it chemically straightened but I don't think she was happy with it so I wouldn't suggest that.

Oh but the one thing I can't stress enough, curls need a lot of conditioning so keep them hydrated and try to enjoy your new look!

I have very thick and very curly, often frizzy, hair.
I fought it for years.

Tried everything...including laying it on an ironing board, putting a towel on top of it, and having a friend iron it, (side note-don't ever do that! lol)

I tried every product..... None could control it. I tried every hair style....none worked.

Whenever I brushed it out, I ended up looking just like Roseanne Rosanna Danna (even did a few posts on that).

Now I have discovered that the best thing is wash it, add a little bit of gel to help with the frizz, run my fingers through it, and go with the flow. (literally).

BTW, BEWARE-blow dryers can make curly thick hair look like Christmas trees!!

Hi Cindy, Glad the hair is growing back but I can see your concern. You can have that beautiful head of hair once again. Step out on the wild side and just experiment or maybe a trip to a professional salon and get some tips(someone who is up on this sort of thing). I am sure that lots of women have been thru this and maybe some of your wonderful bloggers will have some ideas. The girls blogs were just so touching and sweet. Hope Mike is doing well. Take care. Sending hugs and love to you all...Yvonne

That's great that your hair is coming back! When my god mother lost her hair and it started growing back she noticed the same thing. It came in really thick and super curly. She would get so frustrated with it because she didn't know how to handle it. Once it started getting long enough she would get up early every morning and straighten it.

When my father lost his hair...it grew back grey & white! He had the prettiest head of white hair I'd ever seen!
Funny thing is, before he lost it he probably didn't have 15 grey hairs on his head. Luckily it didn't last long. You know how babies are born with a full head of hair and then they lose most of it? That's what happened to dad. In a few months his hair was growing in the original color. Of'course due to the this new treatment he has had to shave his head again and its beginning to fall out...but maybe you will be like my dad and have your 'normal' hair in no time ;o}

Hey Cindy! Ok I'm clueless. I say color it the color you want, and play with different styles til you find something (or several) that you like.

Praising the Lord that your hair is growing back. I have to believe that this experience has brought your family closer together.

Of course, having straight, flat hair, I'm envious of those who have curly hair.

I think you should talk to your hair dresser and perhaps other women who have been through this to hear what they suggest. Color it, have fun with it, do what makes you feel good!

Hugs, Love, and Blessings!

Hi Cindy,

New creation....that is what you are a new creation.

Curly hair can e a headache..pun intended or a blast of sass!

Mine has natural curl which I sometimes straighten and sometimes let it curl.

Praising God for you...your story and the glory you have given to God.
